Devon holidays are no doubt a familiar memory for many in the UK who grew up before planes were used like street taxis, and it remains a popular holiday destination to this day. How could it not?

It's easily accessible, enjoys some of the best weather the British Isles can muster, offers beautiful sea and sand coastlines alongside stunning countryside and rich historical and cultural experiences, has a great variety of local food and drink in conjunction with cuisine from around the world, and it also has plenty of choice places to stay. Oh, and did I mention it's spacious and the welcome is rarely less than warm, relaxed and pleasurable?

It's not for no reason that people have been holidaying in Devon for years, but those who overlook the south-west of England in search of more 'fashionable' places for rest and relaxation just don't know the treats they are missing out on right on their own doorstep.

Devon is an ideal holiday destination for families, thanks to the beaches and all year round activities and things to do. Fishing, sailing and surfing come first to mind, but with two national parks, 500km of coastline and 3500 miles of footpaths, in addition to numerous castles, gardens and maritime cities, there's more than enough to occupy every kind of mind. It is also a superb location for younger people, whether camping or looking for something more salubrious, thanks to the vibrancy of the many coastal resorts and the Mediterranean ambiance that prevails wherever you find yourself.

Many places in the UK offer quality food and drink these days, few, however, can match the freshly caught fish, farmhouse produce and local ales that Devon offers to a consistently high standard.

Arguably the most appealing aspect of a holiday in Devon is the range and uniqueness of the places to stay during your visit. From relaxed yet efficiently run camping and caravan sites to quaint, one-off farmhouses, cottages, B&Bs and guesthouses, Devon accommodation is excellent. And then there are Devon hotels. Striking both in their structure and surroundings, the variety and choice is amazing, from those that stand along the two coastlines to those that are hidden in the more tranquil rural settings. Many are traditional style hotels, but there are also several luxurious boutique hotels renowned for their health and beauty facilities.

Given that nature plays a big part in making Devon the excellent holiday destination that it is, it is no surprise to learn that the county also has an emerging and quality range of organic produce and 'green' holiday options available to those who wish to be gentler to planet earth.

So next time you are leafing through the holiday brochures for a far-flung, exotic destination somewhere in the world, remember not to forget about that gem of a county in south-west England: Devon.
